[ INDEX ] Equine Type: Horse Breed: Aegidienberger [ PREV ] [ NEXT ]
Thought-out origins:
It was created during the second half of the 20th century, by crossing Icelandic horses with imported Peruvian Paso horses. The choice of these two gaited breeds wasn't accidental, and stemmed from the desire to create a new breed that has the tolt gait of the Icelandic, but whose size, comfort, and endurance are closer to those of the Peruvian Paso, especially when it comes to tolerating the heat of summer in Germany, which can be greater than the Icelandic summer and can be a toll on Icelandic horses.
The Aegidienberger today:
The successful crossbred was officially recognized as an Aegidienberger in 1994. Today, Aegidienbergers are still bred in Germany, and are used as mounts. Great attention is dedicated to breeding horses with a fast, comfortable tolt gait, which lacks the characteristic 'termino' of the Peruvian Paso (see 'Peruvian Paso.')
Breeding:
In Horse Isle, Aegidienbergers can be bred by crossing an Icelandic with a Peruvian Paso, or by crossing two Aegidienbergers. Crossing an Aegidienberger with an Icelandic or a Peruvian Paso is not allowed, to prevent too much infusion of Icelandic and Peruvian Paso blood into the Aegidienberger breed.
Conformation:
The conformation of the Aegidienberger is more similar to that of an Icelandic than to that of a Peruvian Paso, especially when it comes to the neck, which is short, and to the mane and tail, which can be coarse. That said, the size and neck-set of the Aegidienberger are more similar to those of the Peruvian Paso.
The mane and tail of the Aegidienberger are medium or long in length, and the legs might have light feathering.
