Regal roots:
In the 16th century, Johann XVI, the Count of Oldenburg, crossed his Friesian horse with Andalusians, Danish horses, Turkish horses, and Neopolitan horses, in an attempt to turn them into better war horses. His successor, Anton Gunther, crossed these new horses with a variety of European stallions, and turned them into carriage and riding horses, who are heavy yet elegant, and who excel in dressage.
The alt-Oldenburg:
Over the next centuries, the demand for strong farm horses outgrew the demand for elegant dressage horses, and Oldenburg horses were bred for their strength. Slowly, the breed became heavier, but maintained the shape and agility required for it to serve as a carriage horse. This newer, stronger type of the Oldenburg is known today as "alt-Oldenburg".
The alt-Oldenburg vs. the modern Oldenburg:
In today's standards, alt-Oldenburgs are heavier and less athletic than modern Oldenburgs, which in themselves were created by crossing alt-Oldenburgs with lighter and more athletic breeds, namely the Thoroughbred. As such, alt-Oldenburgs are rarer than modern Oldenburgs.
