About:
The American Walking Pony was created in 1968, by crossing Tennessee Walking Horses with Welsh ponies. The creation of this breed is attributed to Joan Hudson Brown, who also established the American Walking Pony Registry.
This little pony combines the Welsh's small and slightly concave head as well as its jumping ability, with the Tennessee Walker's relatively long legs and ambling gaits. Today, it is a popular breed for pleasure riding and pleasure driving.
Gaits:
American Walking Ponies can have up to seven gaits which are genetically inherited, the most famous of which are the Pleasure Walk and the Merry Walk, both of which are fast four-beat gaits. Furthermore, in addition to their special gaits, they can also trot and canter.
Breeding:
Following the breed's origins, American Walking Ponies can be created in Horse Isle by crossing a Tennessee Walking Horse with any members of the Welsh Pony and Cob breed (see the Welsh Pony and Cob for more info).
That said, it is recommended to use Welsh Mountain Ponies or Welsh Ponies in order to maximize the chances of getting a foal whose conformation and height don't exceed the American Walking Pony's breed standard.
