History:
White Donkeys were first introduced to Asinara Island during the 19th century, although it is unknown as to whether or not these original donkeys had an albino coat. What is known is that these donkeys were abandoned on this island during the second half of the 19th century and became feral.
Unique albino coat:
The coat color of Asinara Donkeys is unique in the sense that it stems from a unique recessive mutation in the TYR gene, which leads to albinism. As such, these donkeys have a white coat, pale skin, pink hooves, and light-blue eyes. This latter is what differs the albino-white from dominant white, which is characterized by dark eyes.
The lack of pigmentation makes the Asinara Donkey sensitive to sunlight. However, despite their sensitivity, the Asinara Donkeys survived well on the island for decades. During most of the 20th century, Asinara Island was used as a prison, but the prison was closed in 1997. The prison buildings remained, however, and today the Asinara donkeys use them are shelter from the sun.
Where to find real Asinara Donkeys?
Today, a herd of Asinara Donkeys still roams at Asinara National Park which is located on Asinara Island.
