The Austrian Warmblood is a sport warmblood breed, which is bred to excel in show-jumping, dressage, and eventing.

From the Austrian Halfblood to the Austrian Warmblood:
Similar to other European armies, until the beginning of the 20th century, the Austrian army relied heavily on its cavalry. Many of its horses were crossbreds that were created by mixing native Austrian breeds, mainly Nonius, Gidran, and Furioso-Northstar (known today as 'Furioso'). These crossbreds were called 'Austrian Halfbloods'.

As the 20th century progressed, the need for cavalry horses decreased while the need for sport horses increased. The 1960s brought with them great demand for athletic horses that excel in the three Olympic disciplines: show-jumping, dressage, and eventing.

Austrian breeders sought to improve the performance of the local Austrian Halfblood. They did this by crossing Austrian Halfbloods with German sport warmbloods, mainly of the Oldenburg, Holsteiner, and Hanoverian breeds. The successful results of this breeding progress made the Austrian Warmblood a popular breed in Austria.

Breeding and conformation:
In order to continuously improve this breed, Austrian Warmbloods are allowed to be crossed with a variety of other sport warmbloods, as well as with additional athletic breeds (see the detailed breed info at the bottom for a complete list of these breeds).

Because of this extensive crossbreeding, Austrian Warmbloods have the same athletic conformation that is seen in other sport warmbloods, which consists of a long neck, prominent withers, a long back, and long legs.

Performance metrics:
The following are the: range, average, (SD), and MOE of performance metrics of ordered Austrian Warmbloods in Horse Isle (not bred ones). In rare cases, horses might have metrics outside of the range. Breeders can produce horses that are beyond this range.

Additionals: flaxen, minimal-mealy, rabicano, sooty, and all rare patterns.
Pinto note: Austrian Warmbloods usually come in solid coats. However, because they are allowed to be crossed with sport warmbloods who come in tobiano and white-spotted, they can also come in these patterns in Horse Isle.
