Origins of the Avelingese:
The Haflinger breed was created in the 19th century when Avelengo was still an Austrian comune called Hafling. In 1918, the comune became a part of Italy, and its name was changed to Avelengo.
The local Haflinger horses received a similar name, Avelignese, to differ them from the Haflinger horses that were bred in Austria. In addition, the Avelignese horses were marked with HI, while the Austrian Haflingers were marked with H.
The Avelingese vs. the Austrian Haflinger:
The Italian breeders, who used their Haflinger horses for farming, bred their horses to be stronger and stockier than its Austrian ancestors, thus creating a new subtype of the Haflinger breed.
The Avelignese is more muscular and has more leg feathering than the Austrian Haflinger. That said, the two are considered as Haflinger horses, and it is allowed to crossingbreed them freely.

Markings: markings are kept to a minimum, with no more than a star or snip allowed. Horses with too prominent markings are banned from registration.
Height: 13.1hh to 15.1hh.
