About:
Belgian Riding Ponies were created during the 1970s, when Belgian breeders mixed New Forest Ponies, Connemara Ponies, and Welsh Ponies with Thoroughbreds. The result was a sport pony that comes in a wide variety of heights, from 10.3hh to 14.2hh.
Today, Belgian Riding Ponies are popular in Belgium, and serve as mounts for children and young riders who want to compete in the disciplines of show-jumping, dressage, and eventing.
Breeding:
In the USA, Belgian Riding Ponies are allowed to be crossed with German Riding Ponies, and that's reflected in their breeding rules in Horse Isle. In Belgium, they are allowed to be crossed with additional breeds, but there are strict restrictions on the allowed combinations of stallions and mares, which is why these cross breedings are not accepted in Horse Isle.
Conformation:
Belgian Riding Ponies have a 'pony' head with a straight profile and large eyes. Their neck is long and muscular, and connects to prominent withers. The back is strong and of medium-length, but the croup is long and sloping, giving the Belgian Riding Pony a rectangular frame. Overall, the body is muscled.
The mane grows short or medium in length, but the tail grows long. The legs are clear from feathering.
Height divisions:
There are two subtypes of Belgian Riding Ponies. The Large type, which stands between 13hh and 14.2hh, and the Small type, which stands between 10.3hh and 12.3hh. Both of these subtypes are found in Horse Isle.
