What is the 'black Kladruby herd'?
Back in the 18th century, Kladruby horses were bred in two herds: grey herd consists of grey horses, and black herd consists of black horses.
The black herd was dissolved in the 1930s, but was then re-established after World War II. This was done by crossing the handful of black Kladruby horses that remained from the original black herd with Lipizzans and grey Kladrubies.
In 1973 it was decided that there are enough black horses in the herd to breed them in a 'closed', pure manner, without crossing them with other breeds. Today, the black Kladruby herd is maintained by the National Stud at Kladruby Nad Labem.
