[ INDEX ] Equine Type: Horse Breed: British Appaloosa   [ PREV ] [ NEXT ]
The British Appaloosa is a spotted horse breed which originated in England. Therefore, this breed should not be confused with the Appaloosa, which is an American breed with different ancestry.

Spotted horses were brought to England from Spain, and are first depicted in a painting from the end of the 14th century. The British Monarchy and high classes loved the spotted horses, as can be seen in various paintings from different centuries. For example, King Richard II, who lived in the 14th century, and King Charles II, who lived in the 17th century, both rode spotted horses.

Originally, all of the British spotted ponies and horses were under the management of one association, but in 1976, in order to improve the marketability of spotted horses, the association divided into two different societies: the British Spotted Pony Society (see the 'British Spotted Pony,') and the British Appaloosa Society, who chose the 'Appaloosa' title because of commercial reasons. That said, even though that British Spotted Horses were indeed crossed with American Appaloosas, the British Appaloosa a different breed than the American Appaloosa.

During the 20th century, British spotted horses were crossed with Knabstrups and Appaloosas that were brought to England, as well as with Thoroughbred horses who added their athleticism to the developing British Appaloosa. This breed is still being developed, and therefore the conformation of British Appaloosas might differ between horses from different lineages; while some might appear lean and athletic, others might appear wider and stockier. The conformation of the British Appaloosas in Horse Isle is a mix of the two.

British Appaloosas usually come in the colors of bay, brown, black, chestnut, and cream-dilutes. While they almost always have spotted coats, non-spotted individuals born from time to time. Grey and pinto are not found in this breed. The minimal height for British Appaloosas is 14.2hh, and in Horse Isle they stand between 14.2hh and 16.2hh.
