The gaited horses of Santa Catarina:
In the 16th century, conquistadors arrived at the shores of Santa Catarina (a state in nowadays Brazil,) ready to explore the continent further. They brought Spanish horses with them, many of which escaped and became feral.
At first, the horses bred freely in the wild, but starting from the 18th century they were caught, tamed, and bred for their ambling gait called 'marcha.'
The Campeiro:
During the second half of the 20th century, a Brazilian horse breeder named Ivadi Coninck de Almeida came across the descendants of those horses. He noticed they seemed nothing like other Brazilian breeds. In 1976, with the help of fellow breeders, he set up a breeding association to preserve them.
In 1985, the Campeiro breed was officially recognized by the state of Santa Catarina. Still, its numbers remain small to this day. It is used for recreational riding.
Conformation:
Campeiro horses have a light head of medium length that tapers toward a small muzzle with large nostrils. Their profile is straight-to-convex, and their ears are upright and of medium length.
The neck is medium-to-long in length, tapering toward the head but broad at the base and connects to well-defined withers. The back is of medium length, and the croup is slightly sloping. Overall, the body is lightly muscular.
The mane is usually roached except for the forelock and for the end that is close to the withers. In Horse Isle, it comes in short or medium length. The tail grows thicker and longer.
