[ INDEX ] Equine Type: Horse Breed: Dutch Draft [ PREV ] [ NEXT ]
Origins:
The Dutch Draft was developed in the Netherlands at the beginning of the 20th century out of Zeeland horses, which were crossed with Heavy Belgian Drafts (see 'Brabant') and with Ardennais horses.
Being a heavy draft breed, the Dutch Draft was extensively used as a farm horse on Dutch farms especially in the Zeeland province.
The Dutch Draft today:
Eventually, the mechanization of transportation and agriculture rendered the Dutch Draft horses redundant. Nevertheless, Dutch breeders who were fond of their draft horses continued to breed them in order to prevent this breed from going extinct.
Today, Dutch Drafts exist in small numbers in the Netherlands, where they are used for harness work and for recreational riding.
Conformation:
The conformation and general appearance of Dutch Drafts is extremely similar to that of Heavy Belgian Drafts. As such, they have small ears, relatively small heads, short necks, short and thick legs, and large hooves. In addition, their bodies are extremely wide and heavily muscled.
While the tail can grow thick, the mane is short or medium in length, but both can be wavy. The legs have thick feathering which often covers their hooves.
