The Furioso (also known as 'Furioso - North Star') is a rare Hungarian horse breed, which was declared a national treasure in Hungary in 2004.
The Furioso, as we know it today, originated from two separate breeding lines. The first line was Furioso, which was created in 1841, and which was named after its foundation sire, a Thoroughbred called Furioso. The second line was North Star, which was created in 1852, and which was named after its foundation sire, a Thoroughbred called North Star. In 1885, both lines were merged into one breed, the 'Furioso - North Star,' also known as 'Furioso.'
Originally, Furioso horses had a somewhat heavy conformation, as they were bred to serve as saddle or harness horses and to be able to work in farms. However, crossing Furioso horses with Thoroughbred horses lightened the conformation of the Furioso enough so it would be able to perform well in show-jumping. Today, Furioso horses are used mainly for show-jumping and harness racing.
Most Furioso horses are bay in color, but black, brown, chestnut, and grey horses are seen from time to time. Furioso horses stand between 15.3hh and 17hh
