The Halla vs. the Jeju:
Before the Halla came to existence, South Korean riders raced on Jeju ponies (see 'Jeju' for more information). In order to improve the speed of their Jeju ponies, breeders crossed Jejus with Thoroughbreds. The resulting cross, called 'Halla', proved to be a much better racer than the Jeju. Therefore, more and more Korean breeders started breeding Hallas, and the numbers of Jeju horses plummeted.
Today, the Jeju is a rare breed in South Korea, but the Halla is very popular and is used for racing.
