A rare Spanish draft breed:
A breed of unknown origins, the Jaca Navarra roamed the Navarre region in Spain for hundreds if not thousands of years. It was occasionally used by the locals, but never became widespread as other Spanish breeds.
During the 20th century, Jaca Navarras were crossed with Breton, Comtois, Ardennais, and Percheron horses from France to produce the Burguete breed (see the 'Burguete' for more information.) Consequently, the numbers of purebred Jaca Navarras decreased, to a point where the breed became rare.
Today, Jaca Navarra horses live in semi-wild conditions in the mountains of the Navarre region, and efforts are being made to conserve this breed.
Conformation:
Although small in size, the Jaca Navarra is considered to be a light-draft horse because of its compact and heavy conformation.
Jaca Nevarras have a concave or straight profile, small ears, a thick neck, a straight back, a deep girth, and a broad body.
The mane and tail are usually thick and long and can be wavy. The legs have light feathering, and some Jaca Navarras grow a mustache.
