The Kerry Bog Pony is a rare Irish breed named after the bogs in the Irish County Kerry, where it originated.

Origins of the Kerry Bog Pony:
Kerry Bog Ponies originated in Northern Europe and probably roamed Ireland for a couple hundreds of years.

Interestingly, they are more closely related to British ponies, such as Welsh and Shetland ponies, than to Irish breeds. Nevertheless, Kerry Bog Ponies were found to be genetically distant enough from these British Ponies to be regarded as a separate breed, and therefore, in 2012, the Kerry Bog Pony was officially recognized as an Irish pony breed.

The Kerry Bog Pony today:
For many years, Kerry Bog Ponies were used as pack ponies to transport various materials from the bogs. They excelled at this job thanks to their excellent endurance and strength, but mechanization eventually replaced them.

Today, Kerry Bog Ponies serve as mounts for children, and as pack ponies for people who want to explore the bogs on foot.

Conformation:
Kerry Bog Ponies are small and compact ponies with thick manes and tails. They also have dished profiles, a trait which is also found in Welsh ponies (see the 'Welsh Pony and Cob' for more info.) In addition, Kerry Bog Ponies sometimes have little feathering behind their fetlocks.
