The pony from the marshes of Landes:
It is unclear when the Landais Pony first appeared in the region of Landes, but it roamed the local marshes and forests for thousands of years, and became well-adapted to the marshy terrains.
The breed received Arabian blood at multiple points throughout history, but especially during the first half of the 20th century. Following World War II, Landais Ponies were also crossed with Welsh Ponies.
The Landais Pony Today:
The population of Landais Ponies started to decline during the 20th century, and by the 1960s less than 200 Landais Ponies were left. Therefore, conservation efforts started to take place, and included the foundation of the breed's studbook in 1967, but the breed remains rare.
Today, Landais Ponies are primarily used as sport ponies for children.
Conformation:
The influence of the Arabian on the Landais is apparent in the conformation of the latter. The head is light and slender, the eyes are large, the ears are small, the neck is long and can be arched or thick, the back is short, and the croup is slightly sloped.
The tail and mane often grow long, and the legs have light feathering behind the fetlocks.
