The Latvian Draft (also known as 'Latvian Ardennes') is a heavy draft breed originated in Latvia.

Development:
Horses, mostly of breeds that originated in Belgium and Sweden, have roamed the area of Latvia prior to the 20th century. However, the development of the Latvian Draft began in 1918, when Latvia became an independent country.

Heavy horses such as French and Swedish Ardennais horses, and Brabant (Belgian Heavy Draft) horses were imported to Latvia from other European countries. Many of these horses were brought to Okte State Stud, and served as the basis for the development of the Latvian Draft, which was officially recognized as a breed in 1963.

Conformation:
The Latvian Draft has a conformation which is similar to that of other European heavy drafts, in the sense that they have a broad head with a short or a somewhat convex profile, a muscular neck of short-to-medium length, a deep chest, short legs, and a heavy, muscular, wide body.

The mane and tail can grow long and be wavy. The legs have light feathering which covers only the back of the fetlocks and cannons.

Performance metrics:
The following are the: range, average, (SD), and MOE of performance metrics of ordered Latvian Drafts in Horse Isle (not bred ones). In rare cases, horses might have metrics outside of the range. Breeders can produce horses that are beyond this range.

Coats & Height:

Colors: usually chestnut or bay, including dark bay (termed 'brown' in Horse Isle), but can also be black or silver-dapple.

Additionals: flaxen, rabicano, roan, sooty, mealy, dark mane & tail, and grey mane & tail. They often have white markings, but the coat itself is always solid.

White-spotted note: white-spotted exists in the real breed, but is characterized by scattered white hairs and whitish tail rather than by loud sabino markings that extend beyond the lower legs. Therefore, in Horse Isle, Latvian Drafts do not carry white-spotted, but can carry rabicano.

Height: 15hh to 15.3hh.
