The Posavac is a Croatian draft breed, and is the oldest Croatian breed.

About:
Many centuries ago, horses had already roamed in the Posavina region in Croatia. Throughout history, these horses were crossed with a variety of other breeds, namely with Arabians. Further selection, toward qualities of a farm horse who is well adapted to living outdoors in the Croatian climate, resulted in a small yet sturdy draft horse.

Until the 20th century, the Posavac was a common breed in Croatia. However, the development of the larger Croatian Coldblood together with the development of agricultural machines made the Posavac nearly obsolete on the Croatian farm. The breed began to disappear but was subsequently saved thanks to conservation efforts.

The Posavac today:
Today, the Posavac roams Croatia in small numbers and is used for recreational activities and tourism. Posavac horses are also allowed to graze freely in protected pasture lands to prevent the overgrowing of grass and invasive plants.

Conformation:
There are two subtypes within the Posavac breed. The first is the 'heavy' type, characterized by thick legs, a heavier structure, and a deep girth. The second is the 'light' type whose structure is finer and its girth not as deep. Both subtypes are found in Horse Isle.

Regardless of the subtype, all Posavac horses share a couple of characteristics. The head is short but broad, the ears are small, and the profile is straight. The neck is thick and heavy with a prominent crest, and connects to a deep back. The croup is doubled, prominent, and has a steep slope. The legs are short and the hooves are wide.

The lower legs have feathering which ranges from light to medium. The mane and tail are always wavy and often grow long and thick.

Breeding notes: markings on the face and legs can occur, but are uncommon. Horses will receive a heavy penalty for having excessive markings.
