The Quantock Pony is the name for feral ponies that roam freely in Quantock Hills, Somerset, England. It is not a 'real' breed per se, but in Horse Isle it is regarded as a regular breed.

Quantock ponies are the result of Exmoor ponies who were mixed with other British moor ponies, and were then left to graze in semi-wild conditions on the lush Quantock Hills in Somerset, where they bred for dozens of years.

Quantock Ponies Today:
Today, Quantock ponies are rounded up annually for inspection, breeding, and if needed some of the ponies are removed from the herd to be tamed. The rest are then released to graze on the hills.

In recent years, the ponies were often seen as an attraction, and visitors at Quantock Hills used to feed the ponies. This taught the ponies to perceive humans as an easy source for treats, and as a result, the ponies started pushing and attacking people to get feed out of them. Moreover, the treats also posed a colic and ulcer risk for the ponies. Therefore, today, visitors at Quantock Hills are urged to not get close to the ponies, and to certainly never feed them.

Conformation:
The Quantock is not an official breed and doesn't have a breed standard, which is why conformation varies among individuals. That said, many Quantock ponies still show characteristics that they inherited from their Exmoor ancestors.

In Horse Isle, the conformation of Quantock ponies is based on pictures of the ponies, and combines characteristics of various moor pony breeds, primarily of the Exmoor, Dartmoor, and New Forest.

Coats & Height:
Colors: bay, black, brown, chestnut, grey, cream dilutes*.
* There are no records for homozygous cream dilutes in Quantock ponies, but because there is no 'breed standard,' they can be found in Horse Isle.

Additionals: flaxen, linebacked, sooty, tobiano, dark mane & tail.

Height: 13hh to 15hh*
* Height range is based on estimation and unofficial records.
