The Racking Horse is an American gaited horse breed, which is named after its unique gait that is called the "Rack."

From a subtype of a Tennessee Walker to the Racking Horse:
The ancestors of the Racking Horse were Tennessee Walking Horses, who were used by farmers in Alabama, and who performed the "running-walk" gait in a different manner than other Tennessee Walking horses. These horses were nicknamed "racking horses," and were considered to be a subtype of the Tennessee Walker.

In 1971, the Racking Horse Breeders' Association was established, and the Racking breed was officially recognized as a separate breed.

A unique gait - the rack vs. the running-walk:
The Racking Horse is named after its unique gait: the rack. While this four-beat gait is similar to the Tennessee Walker's running-walk gait, the shorter stride-length of the rack makes it a more balanced gait than the running-walk.

Unlike Tennessee Walking Horses who need to bob their head to balance themselves when performing the running-walk, Racking Horses keep their heads relatively still when performing the rack, and that makes them exceptionally comfortable to ride.

The Racking Horse today:
In addition to their comfortable gait, Racking Horses are also said to have a friendly and cooperative personality. Therefore, Racking Horses are usually used for trekking and pleasure riding.
