[ INDEX ] Equine Type: Horse Breed: Sumba Pony (Sumba) [ PREV ] [ NEXT ]
The Sumba is an Indonesian pony breed that is bred in Sumba Island, and should not be confused with the Sumbawa Pony, which is a different Indonesian breed (see the 'Sumbawa Pony.')
The perfect dance partner:
Not much is known about the origins of the Sumba Pony other than it was created out of Mongolian and Chinese stocks. Whatever its origins were, the Sumba grew to be a light pony with light gaits and natural agility.
Today, Sumba Ponies are primarily used for lance-throwing and traditional dancing. For the dance, the ponies usually have bells tied around their knees, and their rider rides bareback. The dance consists of a rapid trotting gait performed on roughly the same spot while the head of the pony is held high.
Conformation:
Sumba Ponies are almost identical in appearance to the Sumbawa Pony, though the latter is a bit smaller in size. They have large heads with straight profiles, short necks, low withers, long backs, sloping croups, and slender legs.
The mane is coarse and is often cut short to stand upright. The tail is finer but grows long.
Performance metrics:
The following are the: range, average, (SD), and MOE of performance metrics of ordered Sumba Ponies in Horse Isle (not bred ones). In rare cases, horses might have metrics outside of the range. Breeders can produce horses that are beyond this range.
