The heaviest of all Polish Drafts:
Powisle, Mazury, and Warmia that is sandwiched between them, are three counties in northern Poland. Each has its own unique history and characteristics, but when it comes to their fields, they all have heavy soil. So heavy, that it required an extra-strong draft horse to work them.
To create a powerhouse of a horse, Polish breeders in these counties crossed the local stock with Ardennais stallions imported from France and with Brabant stallions imported from Belgium. The result was a heavy horse with a deep girth, a broad body, thick muscling, and short legs with large joints, of a degree never seen before in Polish horses. It was named Stzumski.
The Stzumski today:
Today, the Stzumski is still the heaviest draft in Poland. They are used for a variety of draft work as well as for recreational riding for those who want a slow horse. This breed is doing well thanks to a conservation program.
