About:
The exact origins of the Timor pony are shrouded with mystery, but it is very likely that its ancestors were Indian horses, and perhaps also Chinese Mongolian horses, that were brought to the Indonesian Islands.
In the 19th century, Timor ponies were brought to Australia as part of the British colonization efforts. These sturdy ponies had the hardiness and frugality required for survival in the harsh Australian environment, and became one of the most prominent breeds there. They were praised by the British settlers who valued their excellent quality as riding and working ponies, and were therefore used in the creation of various Australian horse breeds, most notably the Waler.
Today, Timor ponies are a rare sight in Australia, but are very common on Timor Island, where they are used for riding, driving, cattle work, and light farm work.
Conformation:
The head of Timor Ponies is small, sporting a straight profile, small ears, and large nostrils. The neck is short in length and is thick with muscles, especially at its base. The withers are slightly prominent, connecting to a short back. The croup is sloping, the tail of low-set, the legs are slender but sturdy, and the hooves are small.
The mane is either short or medium in length, and can either lie flat or be erect. The tail can grow long, and the legs are clear from feathering.
