The Yanqi is a Chinese breed of a light-draft, or heavy-riding, horse that is sometimes gaited.

Origins:
Not much is known about the origins of the Yanqi other than it was created in China in the 13th century out of Mongolian horses, and that at some point it received the blood of Dons and Orlov Trotters (see 'Don' and 'Orlov Trotter' for info about those breeds.)

Two Yanqi Subtypes:
There are two types of Yanqi horses: a heavier type called 'Mountain Yanqi', and a lighter type called 'Plains Yanqi' or 'Basin Yanqi' that is also a natural ambler. Both types are found in Horse Isle, although breeders will do best if they don't crossbreed them (see 'Mountain Yanqi' and 'Plains Yanqi' for more info.)

The Yanqi today:
Today, Yanqi horses are found in several regions in China, especially in Xiangiang and Yanqi. They are used for light farm work and riding. The mares are also milked regularly.

Conformation:
Yanqi horses have a long head with a straight profile that gets convex closer to the muzzle. The neck is thick in its underside and has a broad base. The withers are medium and connect to a long back. The croup varies from short and horizontal to slightly sloping.

Because the legs are not particularly long but the back is very long, the Yanqi has a rectangular frame which is far more elongated than seen in most other breeds.
